: Just over two weeks ago, we learned that our friend Mike MacNamee had passed. As a founder and owner of Stompers Boots here in San Francisco, Mike helped me pursue certain goals in my boot collection, and indeed pursue certain life goals intrinsically linked to the power of those boots. There was the suggestion, two weeks ago, that some friends might gather at the SF Eagle tonight to honor his memory. There was no more recent mention of that plan, on HotBoots or elsewhere, so Bill and I did not make it out this evening, but we toasted Mike's memory at home tonight. Mike was a sweet man of vision, a friend who valued loyalty, leather, and friendship. I was honored to learn that he once described me as A Serious Bootman, and by his humbly asking me what boots I thought he should carry in his store. In 2007 I made the huge step of ordering custom Wesco Big Boss boots (square toe, 3 top buckles) in plenty of time for the Folsom Street fair; they were not ready for the event, and I think I got more press because they were not ready! Mike offered to loan me his own pair to wear over the weekend! My boots arrived at Stompers days later; the Wesco rep explained that there had not been a hide worthy of the boots when the order was placed; Mike took us to the backyard and asked to take some photos, and would I please pose on his motorcycle? See attached...the honor was all mine. Mike's parties during Dore and Folsom weekends were legendary, and deservedly so. He and his staff were working hard, but they always created a comfortable, welcoming space for the Leathermen in Boots who wanted an oasis from the sun, heat, and the crowd. Mike was a super guy. I have many photos of the fairs, the parties and his shop. I have no photos of him, to my surprise and disappointment, but I can see him before me now. I hope he will have fitted out all the angels in hot leather boots by the time I follow him upstairs. Rest in Peace, dear friend.
