To answer your question: IMHO, it is NEVER okay to wear something until it hurts, only for the simple reason that whatever it is you're wearing (footwear, headwear, clothing) should never hurt no matter how long you have it on. If it is the right cut, size and material, it should be worn with ease no matter how long you have it on. Of course, we'll allow for the exception, as Fred points out, of fatigue which can occur if you are on your feet too long. But that will happen in anything you wear, no matter the fit. And I suppose we can allow for the exception of when you are breaking in a new pair of boots, too. There can be some periods of discomfort early on until the boots are fully broken in, depending on the type of boot. But I've had boots that were the most comfortable things I've ever had on my feet IF I spend the money to get the right materials (natural, not man-made) and make the effort to get the right fit.
