I just noticed that an older pair of my lineman boots has developed a case of the green crud on the eyelets. I remember several years back, there was a thread about this, but I don't remember if anyone had ideas about how to remove it. The web suggests something acidic (lemon juice, white vinegar), but this seems counter-productive, since the stuff is apparently caused by a reaction to the acid in the leather, left over from tanning. Another suggestion is WD-40, which sounds strange, but....

Any suggestions would be appreciated (and now I wish I'd gotten the boots with nickel eyelets).
